What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

Not all teeth are naturally “pearly whites.” If your teeth have never resembled the teeth of someone on a toothpaste commercial, that’s perfectly normal. Natural tooth color varies greatly and is heavily dictated by your genes. However, there are other things that can also influence your tooth color.

Stains and discoloration can develop in one of two ways:

Extrinsic Stains: These stains develop on the outer layers of your tooth’s enamel. Typically, these external stains are the result of tobacco use or drinking highly pigmented beverages. Common culprits of extrinsic tooth stains include:

  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Red Wine
  • Nicotine

Intrinsic Stains:
These deep discolorations happen inside the tooth’s inner layers of dentin, a softer material found at the core of each tooth. Typically, intrinsic stains develop when you experience trauma or injury to the tooth. They can also develop as you age or from the use of certain medications.

Extrinsic stains respond favorably to professional whitening agents. However, intrinsic stains do not. When patients have deep tooth discoloration, we often recommend porcelain veneers for a more effective cosmetic result.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

Unlike over-the-counter solutions, the whitening treatments in our office are professional grade/ You’ll achieve superior results in less time.

Whitening treatments from our practice are non-invasive and comfortable. At your appointment, we apply bleaching gels or pastes to the outer surface of teeth. The bleaching agents contain either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide which penetrate the first couple layers of enamel to lift and remove persistent stains.

We may utilize curing light technology to promote even greater stain lifting power. You’ll have immediate results; teeth appear significantly whiter. The whiter, brighter results you achieve from one course of treatment lasts for about 12 to 18 months.

Will I Be a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?

At a cosmetic consultation, our dentists will evaluate your smile to see if you are a candidate for teeth whitening. If Drs. Harlin and Wilkinson determine your teeth stains will respond well to professional whitening treatment, they will then look at the following criteria:
Teeth whitening bleaching agents only whiten natural enamel. They cannot change the color of fillings, dental bonding, or dental crowns. If you have restorative dental treatment in the visible area of your smile, you may find better cosmetic results through porcelain veneers.

Simply as a precaution, we do not offer teeth whitening treatments to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Your mouth should be healthy and strong before teeth whitening treatments can begin. Not only does this keep your oral health in check, but it will extend your cosmetic results.
If you already suffer from sensitive teeth, you may experience some discomfort with a professional whitening treatment. For patients concerned about the sensitivity effects, we can recommend gentler whitening treatments.
We recommend patients do not receive whitening treatments until their teeth are fully developed (usually around the age of 16). Earlier treatments can cause heightened sensitivity in younger patients.
